The Special Forces Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) was developed by Belgian arms manufacturer FN Herstal (FNH) as a reliable and low maintenance modular combat rifle for the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) true carbine M4A1 used by Special Forces units through various branches of the United States Army.

The FN SCAR features ambidextrous controls like an ambi selector and mag release, as well as a reversible charge handle that allows the operator to configure the rifle to his preference. The top one-piece CNC receiver features an uninterrupted Picatinny top rail with two removable side rails and a bottom rail for mounting any MIL-STD-1913 / Picatinny accessories. The lower heavy duty polymer receptor helps reduce the overall weight of the rifle while maintaining most of the controls of the already known M4 / M16 system. Foldable telescopic material allows the rifle to be fully adjustable for the length of the pull to accommodate any operator. With the folded material, the SCAR offers a significantly lower profile than even the M4A1, allowing for easy storage and transport
